On July 13, 2014 a Utah State football player was arrested on driving under the influence (DUI) charges. The 22-year-old player, Ronald Butler, is originally from Jersey City.

According to police records, Butler was pulled over for an improper lane change, which led to suspicion of a DUI. He was arrested and booked into the Cache County jail, and is being charged with driving under the influence and improper lane change, both of which are categorized as Class B misdemeanors. Butler was later released from jail after posting a $1,490 bail.

The player is about to enter his senior year at Utah State University. During his junior year as a wide receiver, Butler played 13 games and ended the season with 24 receptions for 346 yards and three touchdowns. It's not yet clear whether he'll be permitted to stay on the team if his DUI charges result in a conviction, although it's likely that at least a suspension would be in order.

If convicted, Butler faces the following penalties:

  • A mandatory three-month driver's license suspension
  • Up to 30 days in prison
  • A minimum of $700 in fines
  • Mandatory enrollment in a drug and alcohol education class
  • Additional penalties for his second misdemeanor
  • Consequences pertaining to his academic and athletic career at Utah State

A DUI conviction can have lasting, negative effects on a defendant's personal and professional life. If you are accused of driving under the influence in New Jersey, consult an attorney who can help you deal with the charges and avoid maximum penalties.
