A six-month-long investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) into the working conditions of the Brantley Bros. moving company has concluded amidst reports that the employer will face numerous fines for health and safety violations.

OSHA has proposed that an $89,600 fine be levied against the Newark-based company for what it is calling "irresponsible and totally unacceptable" working conditions. Some of the alleged violations include:

  • A lack of safety and health precautions such as personal protective equipment, exposure monitoring, and using a regulated area when workers were removing pipes and pipe insulation containing asbestos
  • Exposing workers to fire hazards due to improperly maintained exit routes
  • Failing to train employees on the proper handling of asbestos and related health hazards
  • Failing to identify and label asbestos in the storage warehouse

Speaking on the violations, Kris Hoffman, director of OSHA's Parsippany Area Office, said, "In 2015, nobody should be surprised to learn that asbestos exposure is dangerous. Brantley Brothers required its employees to remove dry asbestos from piping without any personal protection equipment. Asbestos exposure can cause cancer[.]"

Brantley Brothers, which on its website lists among its services corporate relocation and laboratory relocation, has been given 15 days from receipt of OSHA's complaint to accept or contest them.

Workplace safety should be taken seriously by all employers. Don't make the mistake of underestimating the seriousness of an accident, injury or potential toxic exposure.
