Motor vehicle accidents: 3 injured in New Jersey

Three people, including an 8-year-old girl, were injured in a serious crash in Harrington Park. New Jersey authorities reported on this latest of motor vehicle accidents of the dangerous holiday season. So far, charges have not been filed against either driver involved, but the crash is still under investigation at this time.

According to authorities, around 7 a.m. on Jan. 2, a minivan driven by a 34-year-old Norwood woman was traveling eastbound on Old Hook Road, when the driver crossed the double yellow line. This caused her vehicle to strike a westbound vehicle, driven by a 74-year-old man, head-on. The force of the impact threw an 8-year-old passenger in the minivan from her car seat.

Both the driver and the girl were rushed to a local medical center, where both are listed as being in critical condition. The older driver was also taken to the same medical center for treatment, but the extent of his injuries were not included in this report. Police shut down Old Hook Road for several hours to facilitate their investigation.

Motor vehicle accidents of this type are both clearcut and not. One driver committed a traffic violation by crossing the center line, but a variety of other factors could have influenced the events of Jan. 2. This is why New Jersey police will continue to carefully review the case before filing any charges. However, considering the facts of the case, it would be possible for the older man to file a personal injury lawsuit against her in civil court, regardless of whether police choose to file criminal charges against her.
