Motor vehicle accidents: Massive bus crash kills 1, injures 20

A serious accident involving a transit bus and three cars has sent 20 people to the hospital and one to the morgue, according to local sources. New Jersey authorities responded to the crash that took place the evening of Jan. 24. Motor vehicle accidents, especially those involving multiple vehicles and/or causing fatalities, are carefully investigated by police before charges are filed.

According to the information provided in the report, a bus carrying over 24 passengers was headed east on Interstate 80 in Morris County when the accident occurred. For some reason, the bus collided with three other vehicles, causing massive damage. One of the passengers on the bus, a 21-year-old woman, was ejected from the vehicle by the force of the impacts, landing in oncoming traffic. She was pronounced dead on the scene by arriving medical personnel.

A total of 20 other individuals from the bus and the other cars were transported to a local medical center. Of those individuals, three still remain in the hospital, with two in serious condition and one in critical condition. The identities of the injured parties have not been released, pending notification of next of kin. Police shut down the express lanes on the stretch of I-80 to facilitate their investigation.

Motor vehicle accidents that claim lives are always tragic. It will be up to New Jersey crash investigators to determine which driver or drivers can be held materially responsible for this accident. Even if police do not choose to file charges against any of the drivers, it still remains possible that wrongful death and/or personal injury suits could be filed against one or more drivers in civil court, based on evidence gathered during the course of the investigation.
