Motor vehicle accidents: 1 dead, 1 seriously hurt

A serious crash on the Garden State Parkway has claimed one life and sent one other person to the hospital, according to authorities. The New Jersey State Police have confirmed the crash, which happened in the evening of June 22. The report says the investigation into the crash closed the parkway for several hours, which is not uncommon in large motor vehicle accidents. So far, no charges have been filed.

The report says that around 5:30 p.m., an SUV was traveling on the GSP when it entered the right shoulder for reasons unknown. The SUV rear-ended a parked vehicle, which caused a chain reaction wherein that vehicle rear-ended a second. The driver of the SUV reportedly escaped with only minor injuries.

The first struck vehicle was carrying at least three people, one of whom was pronounced dead at the scene. A second was rushed to a local hospital with serious injuries. The drivers of the second two vehicles were not in their cars when the impact occurred and were not injured. The identity of the individual who was killed has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.

In motor vehicle accidents causing fatalities, a thorough investigation is both required and expected of New Jersey authorities. Likely, they will focus their investigation on the initial driver who rear-ended the parked car. If that individual is found to have been operating the vehicle in a reckless or negligent manner, or while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, that person could face criminal charges. Separately, injured parties and the family of the deceased are entitled to file a lawsuit against that person through the state's civil justice system.
