Motor vehicle accidents: 1 dead, 1 in custody in New Jersey

South Brunswick was the site of tragedy after a serious accident claimed the life of a motorcyclist. New Jersey police have arrested another man, who is believed to have fled the scene of the fatal crash. As with many motor vehicle accidents deemed hit-and-runs, police are asking for the community's support in gathering evidence and fully understanding the cause of the crash.

According to the report, around 8:50 p.m. during the evening of Aug. 8, a 25-year-old man riding a motorcycle was reportedly struck and killed by another vehicle. It is not clear whether he was pronounced dead at the scene, or if he was first transported to a hospital. The man has been identified now that next of kin have been notified of the tragedy.

Police on the scene reportedly followed a trail of fuel from the accident to a local bar, where they found an early model SUV leaking fuel. The vehicle was registered to a 57-year-old man who was not present in the vehicle or the bar. Police followed up and later arrested the man at his home. He is charged with leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle crash, among other accusations.

Motor vehicle accidents causing fatalities are always tragic, and must always be carefully investigated by New Jersey authorities. In this case, the accused man could face jail time if he is found guilty of the charges against him. Separately, the family of the deceased motorcyclist may choose to file a wrongful death suit against him in civil court, using evidence of his negligence or recklessness to advance their claim.
