Should office workers worry about workplace injuries?

Believe it or not, office jobs can cause some of the same injuries seen on construction sites. The reason for this is because regardless of the type of position, administrative or construction, ineffective safety rules and violations could lead to accidents.

The office space is one of those places people tend to forget about because it seems structured and protected. However, indoor injuries are just as likely to occur as they would outside or in a constructive environment.

Qualities of a safe workplace

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a safe workplace consists of many different qualities. Some of these include:

  • Proper work tools and efficiently designed work stations
  • Controlled physical environmental factors such as light, noise, humidity and temperature
  • Employee’s ability and knowledge taken into consideration for assigned tasks
  • Accounting for psychological factors such as mental health, personal interactions and productivity

Results of unsafe work environments

When a company fails to correctly and efficiently implement their workplace safety rules, it can lead to workers hurting themselves. The results of unsafe working conditions could lead to long term and chronic symptoms such as:

Neck and back pain from falling, slipping on wet floors, tripping over electrical cords, loose carpets and open drawers, sitting for extended hours, bad posture and using nonadjustable furniture.

Vision problems from office lighting failing to meet regulatory standards and staring for long hours on screens without breaks.

Joint pain from wrist and hand pain while using harsh force to type, write and staple for long hours.

Office spaces expose employees to many different types of dangers, which may lead to short and long term or even disabling injuries. It’s important for office workers to watch out for objects in the way, practice good ergonomics and be safe when moving and lifting objects. Injuries on the clock can lead to expensive medical costs and unplanned time off.
