Motor vehicle accidents: 1 dead in New Jersey

A serious accident on the New Jersey Turnpike has claimed one life, according to sources in Ridgefield. New Jersey State Police responded to the 4-vehicle crash on the afternoon of Oct. 26. Police are still investigating the cause of the crash, as motor vehicle accidents causing fatalities can sometimes lead to criminal charges being filed against one or more drivers.

Very little information was available from the report, but it has been confirmed that the accident occurred around 2 p.m. in the southbound lanes. State Police say that two SUVs, one passenger car and one box truck were involved in the collision. It appears the box truck struck the rear of the passenger car, though how the other two vehicles became involved was not mentioned.

A 55-year-old male passenger in the car was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity was being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin. Police say no one else was injured in the crash, and they have not ruled out recklessness, negligence or intoxication as possible factors. So far, no arrests have been reported, and police have not indicated whether they will press charges at this time.

Fatal motor vehicle accidents can often be attributed to improper conduct by one or more drivers involved. While this does not always result in criminal charges being filed, the family of a deceased victim is entitled under New Jersey law to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the driver or drivers whose negligence materially contributed to the accident. In this case, the family may choose to file suit against the box truck driver, and possibly the company that employs the driver as well.
