Motor vehicle accidents: 3 women in New Jersey killed

Three women have lost their lives after a crash in Woodbridge, according to spokespeople for the local police department. Officers in the New Jersey town responded to the crash, which reportedly involved a passenger vehicle and a tractor trailer late on the night of Dec. 20. So far, charges have not been filed against anyone involved, but as with many motor vehicle accidents, police are still attempting to determine the cause of this tragic crash.

According to police, no eyewitnesses were present for the crash, which happened around 11:50 p.m. the night in question. It appears the tractor trailer was just pulling away from a stoplight that had recently changed to green when the passenger vehicle, driven by a 23-year-old woman, crashed into the back of it. Two passengers, aged 23 and 24, respectively, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the passenger vehicle was rushed to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The driver of the truck reportedly stayed at the scene and cooperated with police. Officers have not been able to ascertain whether driver error on the part of the deceased woman played a role in the accident. They were not immediately able to tell how fast she was going at the time of the crash.

In motor vehicle accidents where the responsible driver is killed, criminal charges no longer apply. However, New Jersey state law allows the families of the other deceased passengers to file civil suits for wrongful death against her estate. While these suits are handled by civil court, any evidence of driver error gathered by police can be used to support the lawsuit.
