Multiple personal injury cases may follow New Jersey crash

A serious car accident in Jersey City injured several people earlier this month. New Jersey authorities responded to the car accident late in the day on Jan. 3. While they are not planning to file charges against the driver involved in the accident, the injured parties may ultimately choose to file personal injury lawsuits in civil court.

According to the report, it appears an SUV driver was traveling near the intersection of Orient Avenue and Martin Luther King Drive when the accident occurred. It appears the driver lost control of the vehicle, putting the SUV in reverse. This caused several people to be pinned by the vehicle against a gate in front of a local grocer. Police are still unsure what caused the driver to put the vehicle in reverse, but they do not believe it was done intentionally or as a result of intoxication or reckless driving.

Three adults and two children were pinned by the vehicle. All individuals involved suffered injuries described as non life-threatening, and were taken to local hospitals. None of these individuals, including the driver, have been publicly identified by authorities. Everyone is expected to recover, and the driver has not been charged.

Even though no criminal charges are likely in this case, the injured parties and their families still have legal recourse available to them. A personal injury suit filed in New Jersey civil court can be filed by each injured individual, or their guardians in the case of the children. These suits are not reliant on a criminal charge or conviction, but still require evidence of the driver's negligence with regard to the accident.
