Motor vehicle accidents: 3 badly hurt in New Jersey

An apparent wrong-way crash has set three people to the hospital with serious injuries, according to local sources. Police and emergency services in New Jersey responded to the accident, which occurred in the westbound lanes of Interstate 78. For the moment, no charges have been filed against the wrong-way driver, but as with many motor vehicle accidents, the investigation is still underway as of this report.

According to the report, it appears a 51-year-old woman from out of state somehow managed to end up driving east in the westbound lanes of Interstate 78 around 2 a.m. the morning of May 3. Her vehicle sideswiped a pickup truck before colliding head-on with a westbound car. Somehow, she escaped the collision with only minor injuries. The pickup truck driver also sustained only minor injuries.

The individuals in the car were not so fortunate. A 16-year-old boy and a 25-year-old man were both thrown from their vehicle, causing serious injuries to both individuals. The 41-year-old male driver remained in the vehicle but was also badly hurt. All three were airlifted to a local medical center. One of them is listed as being in stable condition, while the other two remain critical at this time.

New Jersey police may yet file charges against the wrong-way driver, depending on the outcome of their investigation. Motor vehicle accidents causing injuries are always carefully reviewed to determine whether criminal action took place. Even if no charges are filed, state law allows individuals injured in accidents to file personal injury suits through civil court proceedings. These suits do not rely upon conviction or even criminal charges in order to be put before the court.
