INCREASING NUMBER OF CAR SAFETY TICKETS BEING HANDED OUT TO DRIVERS ACROSS NEW JERSEY
The word is out: there has been a sharp increase in tickets being written for car safety violations across the entire state of New Jersey, according to a review of court records conducted by The Daily Record newspaper. According to the report, New Jersey policemen issued almost 100,000 tickets for poorly maintained lights last year, along with a 39 percent increase in tickets issued for chipped or broken windshields.
The review, which surveyed court records from as far back as 2009, also found that 3,700 cars were caught with worn tires. Commenting on the rise in tickets, Fair Lawn Patrolman Tim Franco stated, “I think most of us realized we’d have to be more vigilant now that safety checks were no longer going to be required.”
Rise in Citations Possibly Linked to End of Safety Inspections in NJ
New Jersey eliminated its law requiring mandatory annual inspections for auto vehicles, instead choosing to rely on three mobile vans operated by the Motor Vehicle Commission, which are authorized to make roadside inspections. Since the mandatory inspections were rescinded back in August of 2010, the only mandatory inspections in New Jersey are for vehicle emissions. In making this switch, New Jersey became one of 30 states that does not inspect cars for mechanical defects. Governor Christie has defended the rescission of mandatory inspections by citing the estimated $17 million that is saved annually as a result. Opponents of the law revoking mandatory inspection have argued that mechanical defects contribute to approximately 12% of all auto accidents.
Recent Accidents Result of Weather, Other Drivers
On March 13th, a truck carrying a load of cars on Route 80 collided with several other vehicles, resulting in a 10-car pileup that delayed traffic for almost two hours. Two people were injured during the crash, including one man who was taken to St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Paterson with broken ribs.
Police investigators discovered that the crash was caused by the trucker’s inattention to the pace of traffic slowing down; this incident should be a reminder to always keep your eyes on the road.
